Alarm level "Red" for our hobby: A current analysis of the dynamics at the EU level shows that the ban on animal husbandry is dangerously close through the backdoor of a "positive list." Even the IUCN is now considering this instrument. Manfred Dietz sheds light on the background of an unequal lobbying battle and presents three concrete ways in which we as aquarists can still prevent the impending end of our hobby.
Dear fellow aquarists,
after a recent Zoom lecture about the status quo and the dynamics surrounding the planned EU positive lists, it is time to set a clear warning signal. While the topic is currently somewhat in the background in Germany, there is a dangerous dynamic at the EU level.
The current situation
Alarmingly, even the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) is now considering positive lists as a potential means for animal protection in its recommendations. This is a development that should deeply concern us as responsible aquarists.
We are facing an overwhelming force: Professional animal rights organizations operate with million-euro budgets and over 40 full-time lobbyists in Brussels. Their goal is clearly defined: The keeping and use of many animal species should be fundamentally prohibited. An EU-wide positive list would mean the end of aquaristics as we know it – the acquisition and keeping of most fish species would be at risk.
Where is the resistance?
It is incomprehensible why the broad outcry from the hobby community has so far been absent. Currently, the main burden of political resistance is essentially carried by the ZZF (pet trade) and the BNA (with Dr. Martin Singheiser).
This is not enough! Both the mass of voices and the necessary financial resources are lacking to stand against the professional lobbying efforts of the opposition.
How can you support quickly and effectively now?
There are three concrete ways to take action:
1) Become an individual member of the BNA e. V. : The membership fee goes directly into political work.
2) Communicate your opinion to the EU : Contributions are read and included in the evaluation.
3) Become a member of the DCG : The DCG is a member of the BNA, and for each DCG member, a contribution is made to the BNA.

The BNA has summarized the issue in a video that underscores the seriousness of the situation:
My appeal to you
Please become active now. Support the organizations that are already fighting on the front lines. If we only react when the laws are passed, it will be too late. The consequences will hit us faster than many think possible.
