AKF Zoom appointment: Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at 8:00 PM Parasites are a common cause of fish diseases. Because they are difficult to recognize and symptoms are non-specific (itching, rubbing), a correct microscopic diagnosis is key. Find out why the precise identification of the parasite is essential for quick and successful treatment in both the aquarium and the pond.

Topic: „Parasitic Diseases of Fish – Diagnosis and Therapy“

Content: Summary

Parasitic infections are a common cause of diseases in aquarium and pond fish. Since not only the skin but also the gills and internal organs can be affected, an infestation isn't always obvious. Moreover, because many parasitic pathogens are microscopically small, diagnosis with the naked eye is possible only for a few diseases. Infected fish show varying disease symptoms depending on the severity of the infestation, such as itching and rubbing. However, these symptoms are often non-specific and could therefore be attributed to other causes of illness. Since very different medications are required for the various types of parasites, a correct diagnosis is absolutely necessary for quick and successful treatment.
