"Peru Altum" is an attractive form of angelfish from the Peruvian river Rio Nanay, which resembles the rare Pterophyllum altum in appearance. Due to its appearance and availability, it is gaining increasing popularity among aquarists.
While the scalar of high Pterophyllum altum is still relatively rare in European aquariums, Amazonian angelfish Pterophyllum scalare are much more.
Pterophyllum scalare are many color variants, among them and perhaps in the future, new types will also be determined.
From this group of scalars, the so-called "Peru Altum" is very close to the best "alts". They mainly come from Rio Nanay in the Loreto region of Peru. Their export is primarily carried out from the Peruvian city of Iquitos.
Characteristics
They are angelfish, which often resemble the dream altums, especially with the curved frontal line, particularly in males. They will definitely not disappoint the aquarist, as under suitable conditions they can reach a height of around 20 cm, like the fish in our pictures. Otherwise, they behave similarly to other angelfish.
I first received these fish in the 1980s. At that time, the export of fish from Rio Nanay also began. And just as the typical discus are for this blackwater river, so too is "Peru altum" a completely unique color variant typical for blackwater.
Several color variants are currently imported from Peru, the most famous of which is probably Pterophyllum scalare "Rio Nanay", which is often confused with "Peru altum".
Rio Nanay
Rio Nanay is a 315 km long river with black water in northern Peru flowing through the Loreto province. It is one of the tributaries of the Amazon, into which it flows at Iquitos. Among aquarist traders, it has become known primarily for the catch of beautiful discus fish.
Recently, beautiful species of South American cichlids, catfish, armored catfish, and tetras are being imported from it.
Breeding and rearing is very similar to other species Pterophyllum scalare. Just a reminder to use both larger aquariums and warmer water around 26-30°C.
