The red neon tetra, scientifically known as Paracheirodon axelrodi and commonly referred to as the Cardinal tetra in English, is one of the most popular species of freshwater fish for aquariums. This fish, known for its striking red and blue coloration, is favored not only for its beauty but also for its peaceful nature and relative ease of care.

The red neon tetra originates from South America, specifically from the Amazon and Orinoco rivers. These areas are characterized by soft, acidic water and dense vegetation. In the wild, they are found in darker waters where light is limited, and the water temperature ranges between 23-27 °C.

Tank size: For keeping red neon tetras, an aquarium with a volume of at least 60 liters is ideal; however, larger tanks are always better, especially if you plan to keep larger groups of these fish. Red neon tetras are schooling fish and feel best in groups of at least 10 individuals.

Food: Red neon tetras are omnivorous fish. In captivity, they accept a varied diet including flake food, small live or frozen foods (such as brine shrimp nauplii, daphnia), and special pellets designed for small fish. It is important to provide a balanced diet that supports their health and vibrant coloration.

Behavior and compatibility

Red neon tetras are peaceful and easily get along with other fish species. They are ideal for community aquariums and can be kept with other calm fish of similar size, such as tetras, rasboras, or small catfish. Avoid keeping neon tetras with aggressive or significantly larger fish that could stress or attack them.

Breeding

Breeding red neon tetras in a home aquarium can be challenging, but it is not impossible. For successful breeding, it is necessary to prepare a separate tank with soft, slightly acidic water and a temperature around 26-28 °C. A pair of neon tetras is placed in this tank, where spawning will occur. After spawning, the parents need to be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs. The fry hatch after 24-36 hours and begin accepting fine live food, such as brine shrimp nauplii, after a few days...
