A significant property of the substrate is that it does not compact, and therefore there is a constant supply of oxygen at the roots, allowing them to thrive, preventing them from turning black, and fulfilling their role of providing the plant with an optimal amount of necessary nutrients. The substrate helps to optimally break down waste materials generated in the aquarium from feeding and from fish, which burden the water and contribute to the growth of algae and cyanobacteria.
