Summary:
Nitrification is one of the most important biochemical processes in aquariums and garden ponds. It prevents the accumulation of toxic excretions and ensures the survival of the animals. The end product nitrate accumulates in the water and burdens the animals. It can be significantly reduced through water changes and controlled denitrification. Since ion exchangers and reverse osmosis systems are not used in aquariums for nitrate reduction, the only option is to reduce nitrate levels through regular water changes. Another possibility is provided by denitrification, the biological breakdown of nitrate. This is primarily of interest in marine aquariums, as regular water changes are very expensive.
