Harald Kahden - short biography

Few hobbies can hold a person's interest for a lifetime, but for Harald Kahden, this is unequivocally true. His aquaristic journey began in 1963 with a small 60-liter tank of guppies. Since then, Harald has traveled a path that has taken him from South American cichlids through the depths of Lake Tanganyika to expeditions in the Colombian rainforest.

Harald is not just an ordinary breeder; he is a visionary and builder. After years of running a professional breeding station with dozens of tanks, he decided on a radical change in 2020. He transformed his entire aquarium cellar beyond recognition to make room for his lifelong dream: a monumental concrete XXL aquarium.

What makes Harald's approach exceptional?

  • Technical courage: Instead of classic glass, he opted for a reinforced concrete structure with an epoxy coating. His current tank with a front glass length of 3.85 meters is essentially a solid part of the house.

  • Field experience: Harald does not rely solely on books. He has traveled to Lake Tanganyika and the rainforests of Colombia to understand the natural habitats of fish and to replicate them as accurately as possible.

  • Sharing the passion: Despite health complications in recent years, his enthusiasm has not waned. He shares his experiences in breeding rare species and technical details from building his tanks with the community on his website Tanganjika-Dreams.

Today, Harald serves as an inspiration for aquarists around the world. He demonstrates that this hobby has no limits – and that even after sixty years, one can start anew in aquaristics, boldly and in grand style.

We look forward to an exciting evening and a rich participation. Guests are, of course, warmly welcomed!
